FAQ - Apartment's Quick Facts


1. Do the UNSW Student Apartments provide full board accommodation?

No. The UNSW Student Apartments are designed for independent living for undergraduates and postgraduates including couples and families with children. Tenants are responsible for cleaning their own bedrooms and apartments, plus the cost of food and electricity bills.


2. Are ASC rents affordable?

In comparison to other housing providers, our rents are very competitive.


3. How many places are available at the UNSW Student Apartments?

The Barker Apartments have 230 places in 59 apartments of varying sizes, most of which are five-bedrooms.

The Mulwarree Apartments provide 185 places in 37 five-bedroom apartments.

The 46 High Street Apartments comprises of 6 one-bedroom and 9 two-bedroom apartments.


4. What are the room sizes?

The average room size is approximately 10 – 12 square metres.


5. Are the UNSW Student Apartments furnished?

Each bedroom is furnished with a bed, mattress, desk, chair and clothes storage area. Each apartment has a refrigerator, stove and vacuum cleaner. There are also inexpensive, coin-operated laundries.

Each of the five bedroom apartments has a kitchen, a bathroom (containing two showers, two toilets and two hand basins) and dining/living area furnished with sofas, coffee table, dining chairs and dining table.


6. Where are the UNSW Student Apartments located?

The Barker Apartments are located on-campus adjacent to the University Village Green, on Barker Street, next to Shalom College.

The Mulwarree Apartments are located off-campus in Cowper Street, adjacent to Randwick Racecourse, approximately 1.5 km from UNSW (approx. 15 mins walk).

The 46 High Street Apartments are located opposite the University entrance Gate 9a, High Street.


7. Do the UNSW Student Apartments have telephone and Internet access?

Each apartment has a telephone line in the lounge for use by all residents, though this connection may need to be connected at the tenants own expense. Tenants may also have a telephone installed in their own bedroom at their own expense.

Students residing at the Barker Apartments will have access to the Internet through the university Uniweb from their bedrooms. It is necessary to open an account with UNSW IT Service desk, which also provides IT support.


8. Is there parking facility at the UNSW Student Apartments?

There is a car park at the Mulwarree and 46 High Street Apartments for exclusive use by the tenants. Tenants at the Barker Apartments can obtain a parking permit which allows them to park in the nearby University car park – there is a charge for the permit.


9. Do I need to sign a lease?

Yes. All tenants are required to sign a lease which starts from the moving in date and ends during the following February.


10. What are the tenancy conditions?

11. Will I be penalised if I break the lease?

Tenants may terminate their tenancies earlier than the official termination date without incurring a penalty if their academic program of study finishes before this date or, if there are ‘extenuating’ circumstances beyond the student’s control. Exchange students who are studying at UNSW for one semester are exempt from this condition. In all circumstances tenants need to give ASC a minimum of 2 week’s written notice.

Tenants may be penalised if they break the lease. The maximum penalty is equal to 4 weeks rent. The actual penalty depends on how long the room is vacant.


12. Can I sublet my room during the University summer break?

Yes, tenants can sublet their room to another UNSW student only during the University summer break. Permission will need to be sought from ASC and flatmates must agree to the subletting.


13. Can I smoke at the UNSW Student Apartments?

Tenants can only smoke outside their units or on balconies (with the balcony door shut). No smoking is allowed at any time inside the bedrooms or apartments.
